While California directs $230 million to Planned Parenthood, Save the Storks deploys mobile medical clinics and community partnerships to reach women in maternal care deserts
PLANO, Texas — As California directs a combined $230 million in state funding to Planned Parenthood, Save the Storks works to close a growing gap in maternal care by expanding a three-part strategy designed to meet women physically, emotionally and spiritually during unplanned pregnancies.
Since 2025, California has directed hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars to the abortion provider. As government funding for abortion services grows, Save the Storks is asking, “How can communities better support women facing unexpected pregnancies?”
According to the Guttmacher Institute, 5.6 million American women live in maternal care deserts — regions with limited or no access to maternity services — creating significant barriers to prenatal care and healthy pregnancies. For many women facing unplanned pregnancies, limited support leads to higher stress and fewer real options.
Pregnancy Health Clinics — often outpacing Planned Parenthood in reach, accessibility and long-term care — are filling healthcare and support gaps that abortion providers do not meet. These clinics provide medical care including ultrasounds, pregnancy tests and STD testing; practical support such as diapers, formula, clothing and car seats; emotional support through counseling and mentorship; and connections to housing, healthcare and recovery programs. Unlike Planned Parenthood, Pregnancy Health Clinics walk alongside women for the entirety of their pregnancies and beyond.
“When millions of women face pressure to see abortion as their only option, Save the Storks is working to remove obstacles and expand access to motherhood,” said Diane Ferraro, CEO of Save the Storks. “We are committed to meeting women where they are — physically, emotionally and spiritually — and helping ensure they receive the care and support they deserve.”
To reach women in underserved areas, Save the Storks’ three-part strategy includes:
- Mobile medical clinics that bring healthcare directly to underserved communities
- A national partner program connecting pregnancy health clinics across the country
- A digital platform providing women always-on access to care, resources and real options
Supporters can join Save the Storks’ mission through Life Society, which raises funds to expand mobile medical clinics with free ultrasounds, pregnancy testing and counseling; strengthen more than 100 Pregnancy Health Clinics with resources and support; provide a digital ecosystem for women that meets them anywhere with real care and options; and offer holistic care such as housing, job training and parenting education.
“Save the Storks is committed to continuing to show women that they have options and support if they face an unintended pregnancy,” Ferraro said. “They are not alone, and deserve compassion, love, healthcare, meaningful programs and resources.”
Save the Storks exists to ensure that no woman facing an unplanned pregnancy ever feels alone. Save the Storks is a national nonprofit dedicated to empowering women with compassionate care, accurate information, and practical support so they can make informed, life-affirming decisions. Through partnerships with pregnancy health clinics, a growing network of mobile medical clinics delivering women’s healthcare directly to communities in need, and a digital platform providing always-on access to real care and real options, Save the Storks creates a story of hope for women and families across the nation.
