A New Lens on Life: Why I Changed My Mind on Abortion

Fighting to end abortion used to be low on my list of priorities. Based on my background, that may come as a surprise.

During my 20s, I worked for President and Mrs. George W. Bush at the White House and then served as an aide to former First Lady Barbara Bush. I went on to marry my husband, David, and have three children back-to-back while attending seminary.

My faith in Jesus was the center of my life, and caring for others was always a priority. I ministered to sex-trafficking victims and fed the homeless. I taught Vacation Bible School to children in the worst part of town. I led Bible studies for women at my church.

While I was against abortion, I thought it was an unchanging facet of our society and instead focused on serving those I could see right in front of me.

I did not realize my blindness until 2015, when I watched a series of undercover videos of abortion leaders. In the footage, I was stunned to hear providers discuss their grotesque methods of aborting babies. I cringed as I saw them eating salads as they described the alleged price of tiny organs.

In that moment, God helped me to stop viewing abortion as one mere “issue” among many. Instead, I understood it as an atrocity that ends the lives of children.

I quickly jumped into pro-life ministry and began volunteering at a local pregnancy center. As a freelance writer and editor, I started working with pro-life organizations on communications, research, and development.

Over the last decade, the abortion landscape in America has transformed. Ten years ago, the abortion pill comprised a small piece of the pie compared to today, and Roe v. Wade’s reversal felt like a pipe dream. Despite these changes, the mentality of many people has stayed the same: they struggle similarly as I did and are numb to the culture of death permeating our nation.

None of us can miss the murder and violence that consume our news, entertainment, and national dialogue. It can get to the point where tragedies no longer faze us. As a result, we move on with our days and stay on the sidelines as injustice rages on and people get hurt.

The horror of abortion is especially easy to ignore.

Preborn babies are faceless to us, with their lives lost before they have the chance to take their first breaths. Even though we have technologies, like the ultrasound, to show how these boys and girls are fully human, society deems them non-persons who possess less value than those outside the womb. But that’s a lie with deadly consequences.

As a volunteer at a pro-life pregnancy center, I sometimes saw the ultrasound pictures of babies whose moms we served who decided to go to Planned Parenthood rather than choose life. I gazed at their facial profiles and at their little hands and feet and grieved that no one would ever know their names.

The heartbreaking reality is that over one million of these image-bearers are aborted every year in America. What’s more, the abortion pill now accounts for an estimated 63% of abortions and is even mailed into pro-life states where it is effectively banned. Babies in every part of the country remain in grave danger.

We can’t lose sight of the fact that these are real human beings who deserve the right to be born and live their lives. Protecting them should be a high moral priority for all of us – especially for those of us who proclaim Christ.

That’s why I am grateful to serve on the Board of Directors of Save the Storks. This incredible organization recognizes the innate dignity of each preborn child and works tirelessly to save them from abortion.

I was drawn to Save the Storks years ago because of their genuine hearts. They’re a Christ-centered group whose mission and efforts stand in stark contrast to the values of the world. I wrote and edited for Save the Storks and have remained a steadfast supporter and prayer warrior for them.

Amidst so much depravity in America, Save the Storks creates a culture of life. Their staff, volunteers, and partners reach women facing unexpected pregnancies and provide them with care during their moments of crisis. They give these moms love and grace-filled support that helps them choose life for their babies.

The tangible impact of Save the Storks is undeniable:

  • 109 Stork Buses have been built and are delivering hope
  • Stork Buses are on the road in 35 states
  • 58.7K patients have been served

And amazingly, three out of four women who board a Stork Bus embrace motherhood and choose life.

Save the Storks is a light that counters our country’s deep darkness. They help awaken those who are numb to the devastation of abortion as they minister to moms and rescue the most innocent. I’m thankful for everything they do to protect life and am honored to be a part of it.

DEAR READER

We hope this article enlightened and inspired you to stand up for life.

Despite the overturning of Roe v. Wade, abortions are still prevalent in our nation. As a response to the overturning, the media: from the news to entertainment sources to even political figures and celebrities, have pushed abortion as an ongoing agenda, shaping the way this generation thinks and acts. Misinformation is being spread every day, and people are sadly believing the lies.

Our articles and stories aim to tell one thing: the truth.

We know that it is both a blessing and a challenge to understand the reality of abortion, because knowledge incites belief, and belief incites action. But we’re in this together. We believe that we can make abortion unthinkable.

With your support, we look forward to a future where young women are empowered to fight for their own rights: a right to bring life into the world, to be fearless leaders, to be examples of hope, strength, and undeterred resilience. We look forward to a future where life can happen.

If this article strengthened your belief to reach women everywhere with the truth and to let life happen, then please consider helping us extend our reach by making a gift right now. Your gift of just $10 or $20 helps our mission to create a story of hope and empowerment for every woman facing an unplanned pregnancy.

We aim to create a culture that views “pro-life” as equivalent to having empathy and compassion, providing holistic care (before and beyond pregnancy) and education, and most importantly, choosing to speak and act in love. We are pro-life, pro-love, pro-woman, pro-solution.

Don’t just be part of the movement, be part of the solution, and give today.
