California Governor Gavin Newsom and the state Senate budget committee have signed legislation providing $90 million in additional state funding to Planned Parenthood.
The bill offers further support to Planned Parenthood affiliates across the state after $140 million was invested in the organization in October of 2025.
In total, $230 million has been allocated to funding Planned Parenthood since the fall of 2025.
As state funding for abortion providers continues to grow, the question remains: how should the pro-life movement respond?
Funding for Abortions Hasn’t Slowed
Newsom argues that the federal funding cuts do not only affect abortion services but also limit access to broader healthcare services for women.
“These cuts were designed to attack and assault Planned Parenthood,” Newsom said at a news conference near the Capitol. “They were not abortion cuts; they were attacks on wellness and screenings, and they were attacks on women’s healthcare.”
In their most recently released Annual report, Planned Parenthood shared that they provided 402,230 abortions in one year. According to research by Live Action, Planned Parenthood makes an estimated $200 million a year. This is almost 70% of their reported “non-government health services revenue.”
So, is it really about their other healthcare services?
Some Californians argue that this money should instead go to hospitals facing financial strain. Assemblyman David Tangipa questioned the funding during debate on the Assembly floor.
“Why does Planned Parenthood get a $90-million grant when right now over 60 hospitals in the state of California are on the verge of shutting down?” asked Tangipa.
On September 30, 2025, a rural hospital was forced to close, leaving more than 28,000 residents traveling 30 miles for life-saving medical care.
Despite cuts from the federal government, California and Planned Parenthood remain determined to reach women with abortion services, no matter the cost.
