A man doesn’t become a father when his baby first says, “Dada”, or when a baby first cries at the hospital; he’s a dad when the pregnancy test shows positive. In that moment, his presence, support, and “yes” can make a life-changing difference for both mother and baby. This is Paul and Marissa’s story.
Facing an Unplanned Pregnancy Together
Marissa entered the center seeking a pregnancy test and an ultrasound to confirm her pregnancy and determine how far along she was.
Her face showed a mix of emotions as she faced this impossible choice.
Her boyfriend, Paul, accompanied her. He remained polite, quiet, and close to Marissa’s side throughout the appointment.
During intake, Marissa met privately with an advocate and quickly stated that she intended to have an abortion.
Her words said one thing, but her expression showed some uncertainty. When the advocate asked about her future, she shared that she wanted children someday but felt the timing was wrong. She worried they were not financially prepared.
A Father’s Support
During the ultrasound, it was clear that Paul cared deeply for Marissa. He encouraged her and was there to support her when she needed him.
She wasn’t far enough along to see the baby, so the staff helped schedule a follow-up appointment. Afterward, the advocate met with Marissa and Paul to discuss their options further.
At Marissa’s request, the advocate provided a list of prenatal clinics in the area. Finally, the advocate asked if they had any more questions.
Paul lowered his head and sighed.
She encouraged him to share what he was thinking.
Then it was silent…
Paul paused, then he began to cry.
Given the space and freedom, he finally shared:
He wanted to have the baby.
Marissa gently comforted him. The advocate affirmed his support and encouraged Marissa to explore the fears holding her back. They agreed to return for the follow-up visit.
The Importance of a Father’s Support
Two weeks later, they came back.
This time, Marissa and Paul saw their baby and heard a heartbeat. Their faces filled with emotion as they watched their child on the ultrasound screen.

Afterward, Marissa shared that she had reflected and realized she wanted to be a mother. However, she feared telling her mother and grandmother, who had not been positive influences.
They reminded Marissa that she had strong support from Paul and his family. Her demeanor softened, and she smiled. The couple eagerly signed up for parenting education.
Before leaving, Marissa and Paul expressed their deep gratitude. Marissa said she needed space to process her fears and feel supported. She hugged the staff and shared that she planned to continue the pregnancy and felt excited to become a mother.
Paul was elated.
A Father’s Voice in an Unplanned Pregnancy
We don’t know how Marissa’s story might have ended had Paul not voiced his desire to keep the baby and be a father.

But we’ve seen time and time again that men play a vital role in impacting women’s choices for abortion.
This Father’s Day month, we’re celebrating the fathers who step up courageously and embrace fatherhood with their “yes” to life.
